Blackjack

From my last Vegas trip, I won $250 (took out $100 and kept making $20 bets)

So here are some good resources for learning…

Also, some terminology and etiquette:

-place money on the table when exchanging for chips (and don’t have the dealer reach over)

-“color up” means to trade your smaller denomination chips for higher demonization chips (of equal value of course)

-don’t ever have the dealer reach over to grab the chips when you do “color up”

-if they hand you a red or yellow card (called a cut card), it is because the dealer wants you to cut the deck

-you can use the black jack matrix at the casino table (they encourage it… probably since the probability is in their favor)

Other misc. rules:

-insurance: if the dealer has an Ace, you can place an equivalent of half your bet on the insurance line

My rules:

Always hit when my total is below 11

Always stand when my total is 17 or above

Always hit when my total is 16 or below, and the dealer has 7, 8, 9, 10, ace

Always stand if the dealer has 6 or below, unless I have less than 13, then hit

Double when my total is 11

Double when the dealer has a 5

Don’t touch card with two hands (they will yell at you)

DJ Lessons from Ben

Thought I’d jot down some tricks Ben taught me yesterday:

-use Cue to listen to the track through the headphones

  • The volume slider is for the main speakers

-use auto loop to loop a certain part of a song (I think default is 16 seconds). This button is at the bottom left

-use the hot buttons to quickly jump to a certain part of a song (there is only 8 for the deck he has). This is also found bottom left

-use the “filter” button (bottom left) plus the high/low nob (center) to do the “flying” or under water effect

-the right side has a slider that you can use to control the bpm of the selected song

On mortgages

-Should use have a fixed interest rate if interest rates are going up

-Should use a variable interest rate if interest rates are going down

-for variable, it’s a gamble, but if it goes up, you might’ve offsetted it with he previous year if the previous year was lower

-typically a variable rate has lower interest rates than fixed

-Pre-approval should be done to find your buying power

Uncertainty Principle

If you fire an electron gun into a piece of paper with two slits, the wall behind the paper will have marks right behind either of the slits (this is with a detector counting the number of electrons passing). If you remove the detector, then the pattern on the wall looks more like if a ripple of water passed through the slips.

Basically, this is saying the electrons behaved like a particle with the detector, or like a wave without the detector.

Dollar Value

-If a country increases their interest rates (say the US increases its interest rates ins savings bond), the value of the the currency is likely to go higher since more people will want to invest into the US dollar). This may result in higher mortgage interest rates though (which is bad for me :/)

Making Quick Decisions

Two key points about making good, quick decisions:

  1. The 2 minute rule
  2. Focus on the present

“Those who struggle to make decisions run the risk of letting their lives run them”
